Safe
A professional, closed loop extraction system installed into a properly ventilated environment is very safe. Certified systems are designed to fully recover the solvent, eliminating gas exposure to the surrounding environment. In some regulated areas Class 1 Division 1 Extraction Booths and rooms are required for butane or propane extraction to ensure an explosion proof working environment. An extraction room ventilates dangerous vapors and prevents the atmosphere from reaching the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). Below the LEL, the solvent vapors are too “lean” to ignite.
Additionally, butane or propane extraction equipment operates at relatively low pressures that typically do not exceed 14.9 PSI. This contrasts with super-critical CO₂ extraction equipment with extreme operating pressures from 1,500 PSI up to 8,700 PSI! Hydrocarbon extractors are not subject to over pressurization failures found with CO₂-based systems. Extreme pressures present potential safety hazards that need to be mitigated.
In conclusion, butane or propane is the best choice for efficiency, throughput and higher yields. The butane or propane end product versatility allows you to create a wide range of safe to consume products including craft concentrates, vape pen cartidge oils, and infused products of all types. Butane or propane extraction provides the most benefits compared with all other extraction methods.
Butane is the Easiest to remove from the Oil leaving the fewest residuals possible, making it the healthiest way to extract on earth.

Safe to Consume & Enjoy
Occasionally, you may hear health concerns over the residual butane or propane in products. However, almost all of the butane or propane solvents are reclaimed in the closed loop extraction process. After extraction, any remaining solvent is removed in post processing (e.g. such as with a vacuum oven) and reduced to very minimal, safe-for-consumption levels. Most jurisdictions require analytical product quality testing at licensed laboratories prior to a product being released to the general market for consumption. Products produced with our system routinely pass these tests.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) butane and propane are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use as a human food ingredient, as long as it does not exceed certain limits (FDA 21 CFR 184.1165 2015). Additionally, light hydrocarbon solvents including butane, propane and hexane, have been safely used in the food processing industry for over a 100 years. These include cooking oils from oil seeds such as soybeans, corn, canola, and sunflower. In fact, light hydrocarbon solvents are more widely used for food processing than any other extraction solvent.

Butane and propane extracted oil products have won more High Times awards than products from all other methods of extraction! Hydrocarbon extraction processing equipment, maintains low temperatures during the extraction process, preserving the plant's original aroma and flavor profiles, which results in delicious concentrates. Many super-critical CO₂ extraction systems, in comparison, separate the various fractions of the plant including, terpenes and flavonoids. Oils derived through super-critical CO₂ extraction are often altered by re-combining these compounds in different ratios and even terpenes from other plants. Ethanol extraction is a very aggressive solvent that dissolves more undesirable parts of the plant (such as chlorophyll) and uses excessive heat resulting in terpene loss. This results in unpleasant flavors that need to be cut with PG/VG, MCT, and artificial terpenes.

Higher quality parts produce higher quality extractors:
We are concerned with the quality of our units and not just showmanship, and therefore use only food grade beverage tubing for all of our distiller columns. This is the same tubing authorized for use in dairies and breweries, and is polished both inside and out. We use 304/316L grade fittings.

Material Handling:
Use of superior quality parts means little if the stainless steel is not handled properly. Improper handling, or the use of incorrect equipment such as chop saws, can actually harm the stainless and impair its ability to protect itself, resulting in corrosion and rusting. Our material handling is unmatched in the extractor industry. We use equipment that is made for the handling of stainless steel in order to ensure that the integrity of the stainless is maintained, ensuring trouble-free use.

Superior Workmanship:
After ensuring that we use the best quality parts available, and that those parts are handled correctly, we must make certain that the welding matches that level of quality. Simply stated, our welding is unrivaled. We receive compliments almost on a daily basis regarding the welding quality, and this is something that we take great pride in. Even the polishing of our welds is done only with material made specifically for use with stainless steel, followed by pressure testing to ensure the integrity of every weld. In fact, all of our parts are individually hand-made to exacting standards. Each weld is then hand-polished, and finally tested to as much as 25 times its operating pressure to ensure a long, trouble-free life.

Ultimate in Design and Versatility:
All of our closed loop extractors use our patent pending ergonomic tower, allowing for use as a full length chamber. We also offer the largest collection tank of all other extractors too!

Knowledge:
Knowledge and service are keys to our success. In addition, we supply and support the small scale commercial market, gaining a tremendous amount of knowledge in doing so. We are here to help! Just call and we can answer any questions or help walk you through any process!

Is Butane safe to use for consumable products?

Acute Toxicity Level
N-BUTANE (106-97-8)
Non Toxic: inhalation.

Yes, Absolutely. Butane is non toxic and evaporates completely.
It is used as a propellant in non stick cooking sprays because it mixes with the oils and carries them out of the canister better than other propellants, and it evaporates easily leaving a non toxic fume in the air that quickly dissipates away. When used as a propellant, as much as 25% of the volume of the canisters is filled with butane. It has been used for over 100's years to extract out topicals and consumables for exactly that reason. For decades, butane has been used to not only manufacture, flavorings, fragrances, and food additives but it has been used to deliver those food direct to your kitchen skillet. You can use it to extract topical and internal medicine, perfumes and oils. Especially oils. It is the holy grail of organic solvents and really shines with aromatic fragrances and oils, especially volatile oils/essential oils. Butane is the only solvent that will extract the aromatic and total essence of some flowers such as lily of the Nile.
Component Carcinogenicity
None of this product's components are listed by ACGIH, IARC, NTP, DFG or OSHA.

Why is Butane considered such a great solvent over other solvents such as CO2?

You do not need high volumes of solvents to extract when using butane as the Primary Extracting Solvent because it condenses into a liquid at very low pressures and is very effective at extracting oils due to the being a very Non Polar Linear Molecule. Other solvents such as CO2 require a minimum of 800 psi to begin assuming any efficiency at all. Going as high as 10,000 psi in some extracting processes. The less dense forming gas of CO2 requires much more volume in the containers holding it and the containers must be very heavily constructed to hold the high pressures required to condense it into a liquid which limits the volume of material one can extract from. Requiring great expense in manufacturing and use to build any size machine. It also requires expensive pumps and much experience and labor to perform an extraction. This type of labor is costly. The major drawback to using CO2 is dangerous high pressures, cost of operation and cost of equipment. Making products with CO2 therefore cost much more and the final product price must be higher. Higher prices do not denote higher quality as a rule anymore. Until butane, those higher prices had to be paid. Now a lower cost alternative can produce a higher quality product making some products more profitable and within reach of consumers.

Why Choose Solvent for Oil Extraction?
Butane is twice as efficient as water/steam extraction. Meaning you get better yields!
Butane is 10 times healthier for you than Carbon Di-Oxide extracted oils!
Why choose Solvent (such as butane or propane) for extraction? Below are some key points to consider when deciding your extraction methodology.

Versatility
Butane or propane extracted oils can be used to create the greatest variety of end products compared with other extraction methods. For example:

  • Shatter and Premium Concentrates (Butane or propane extraction consistently produces the best shatter in terms of consistency and retention of the original plant aroma and flavor profiles)
  • Essential Oils
  • Infused Edible Products
  • Infused Beverages
  • Capsules & Pills
  • Topical & Trans-dermal Products
Butane is the best though because it has easier temperature to maintain. Butane turns to liquid at 32degrees, where Propane turns to liquid at -44degrees which requires much more expensive equipment. Most common chillers only reach -20degrees so specialty equipment is needed with Propane.
